About "Chase Away Your Blues: Liner Notes & Lyrics

This is the first full-length release from piano player/singer John "JT" Thompson. A completely solo effort, he mixes Old-School Blues & Boogie-Woogie with contemporary style and sensibilities.

~ The first tune, "Pat's Cafe", is a brief instrumental homage to the barrelhouse and boogie-woogie masters that influence so much of JT's playing. And, it's played on the piano that graces the album cover - the very one JT learned to play on.

~ "Chase Away Your Blues" is an uptempo romp that does just what it promises - makes us forget about all the bad stuff, and feel better about life.(lyrics)

~ "The Boss Told Me" is a one-chord grind through the travails of modern-day work - it may not be hard labor, but we still get the Blues...(lyrics)

~ The 4th tune, "Sugar Free", is the only cut not written by JT. As he swings through this tune by Dallas TX-based guitarist Paul Byrd, however, you know he knows what he's talking about.(lyrics)

~ Every town has some street where all the action is. New York has Broadway, New Orleans has Bourbon Street, Memphis has Beale Street. In this mid-tempo Ragtime-inspired instrumental, JT's tells us about all the action on "High Street," in his hometown of Bellefonte, PA.

~ #6, "Southern Bell," is a bold statement about Love. I think he married that girl...(lyrics)

~ "Chicken Bone," cut #7, is about just being happy with whatever you got.(lyrics)

~ JT tackles the 2010 BP tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico - and our global addiction - in "Cold Firey Lake (Oil In The Water)." (lyrics)

~ "Murphee's Boogie" - another instrumental - gets our toes tapping and takes us home.

Lyrics

Chase Away Your Blues ~ (John I. Thompson)
Put your lamp on in the window  put your key under the mat outside
Put your lamp on in the window  put your key under the mat outside
I'm coming over baby  gonna Chase Away Your Blues tonight

Put on your black lacey stockings  you know that's what I like
Put on your black lacey stockings  you know that's what I like
I'm coming over baby  gonna Chase Away Your Blues tonight

Put the champagne on ice  put the bucket by the bed
When I pop that cork   it's gonna taste like heaven - all right
Baby that's what I like
I'm coming over baby  gonna Chase Away Your Blues tonight

I'm gonna cover you with kisses  from your head down to your toes
gonna set you on fire   put you out with my hose - all right
Baby that's what I like
I'm coming over baby  gonna Chase Away Your Blues tonight

I'm coming over baby  coming over tonight
I'm coming over baby  coming over tonight
I'm coming over baby  coming over tonight
I'm coming over baby  gonna Chase Away Your Blues tonight

The Boss Told Me ~ (John I. Thompson)
The Boss Told Me that I move too slow
Gotta pick up the pace    gotta get with the flow
Says I ain't bringing in enough dough
For the people holding shares and the C E O

The Boss Told Me I gotta move a little faster
Said my numbers are a company disaster
Says I ain't bringing in enough dough
For the people holding shares and the C E O

Yesterday I was the golden boy
I was fast on the track    I was the real McCoy
Today I work just as hard    do all the same stuff
But boss tells me it ain't good enough
Says I ain't bringing in enough dough
For the people holding shares and the C E O

I used to like this job    it was really O K
I could feed my family on my take-home pay
Now my wife's gotta work    and my children, too
To pay the light bill    and have enough food

The Boss Told Me I gotta stay a little later
The Man's gotta have just a bit more paper
Says I ain't bringing in enough dough
For the people holding shares and the C E O
For the people holding shares and the C E O
For the people holding shares and the C E O

Sugar Free ~ (Paul W. Byrd)
Well it's every man's dream     to have a woman with money
I thought I hit the jackpot     when I found my new honey
Shock and surprise     would describe my sensation
When I opened up my eyes     and came to the realization
Instead of paying all my bills     she's depending on me
My brand new sugar mama turned out to be     Sugar Free

No money in her wallet     no money in the bank
No money under the mattress    even the cookie jar is blank
No credit cards     all her bills are overdue
Even the tax man    wouldn't bother to sue
No money in the future    As far as I can see
My brand new sugar mama turned out to be    Sugar Free

She's Sugar Free    She's Sugar Free

Well I work forty hours a week     at a job that I hate
Just to keep our cars in gas     a little something on my plate
If things don't change soon    I'm gonna lose my mind
I've already scraped together    every nickle I can find
I'm tired of grits and eggs    how much longer can it be
My brand new sugar mama turned out to be    Sugar Free

She's Sugar Free    She's Sugar Free

Southern Belle ~ (John I. Thompson)
My Southern Belle     keeps me warm at night
My Southern Belle     knows how to hold me right
Every day     I can tell
I couldn't get through it    without my Southern Belle

She's clear     on what she wants from me
She never plays that game that goes     guess what I mean
She likes it straight     so I give it that way
From sunrise     to moonfall
We both get our say

My Southern Belle     keeps me warm at night
My Southern Belle     knows how to hold me right
Every day     I can tell
I couldn't get through it    without my Southern Belle

She knows the Book     back and forth
And she really knocks me out     with twenty three dash four
She can say the words     that send me on my way
I'm raising Hallelujah     each and every day

My Southern Belle     keeps me warm at night
My Southern Belle     knows how to hold me right
Every day     I can tell
I couldn't get through it    without my Southern Belle

No longer am I lonely     she's always in my heart
And I gave her my word     til death do us part
We keep each other happy     we make each other smile
I know we'll be together     through the very last mile

My Southern Belle     keeps me warm at night
My Southern Belle     knows how to hold me right
Every day     I can tell
I couldn't get through it    without my Southern Belle

Chicken Bone ~ (John I. Thompson)
Bear climbing up     a honey tree
Bear getting down     on a honey tree
Bear digging that     honey tree
Sweetest bear around

Dog crunching on     a Chicken Bone
Dog getting down     on a Chicken Bone
Dog digging that     Chicken Bone
Wagging her tail around

Cat sneaking on     a table scrap
Cat getting down     with a table scrap
Cat put away     that table scrap
Coolest cat around

Oh no
It doesn't take much you know
To put a smile upon my face
Wag my tail     clean my plate

Jimmy's got     a Pottsville beer
Gonna sit down     and drink it here
Jimmy's digging that     pitcher of beer
Pass it all around

Mary's got     a penny spice
Mary's always     cool as ice
Mary's got     a roll that's nice
Pass it all around

Oh no
It doesn't take much you know
To put a smile upon my face
Wag my tail     clean my plate

My girl     is cute as a button
My girl     is hot as an oven
My girl     gives real good loving
Keeping me around

My girl's got     a real good hug
My girl's got     some real good love
My girl is    all the above
Keeping me around

Oh no
It doesn't take much you know
To put a smile upon my face
Wag my tail     clean my plate

Cold Firey Lake (Oil in the Water ~ (John I. Thompson)
There's oil in the water     oil in the sand
Oil in the marshes     rolling up on dry land
Oil in our veins     in every breath we take
But we gotta go back     but we gotta go back
To the Cold Firey Lake

Went searching for her     a long time ago
She seemed the answer     to my prayers
Fanning the flames     of the fire down below
She took me every where
From ocean's deep     to Heaven's horizon
She made a broke man rich
With a politician's promise     a salesman's grin
and a heart     as black as pitch

Now there's oil in the water     oil in the sand
Oil in the marshes     rolling up on dry land
Oil in our veins     in every breath we take
But we gotta go back     but we gotta go back
To the Cold Firey Lake

I know I've got to leave her     I've got to get away
But there's no place else     for me to go
I've been staring at the sun     twisting in the wind
Shuffling cards of smoke
Now there's an atom's chance     I might get away
But things     will have to cool down
So now she's digging deeper     to get me to stay
As I bow before her blackened crown

So there's oil in the water     oil in the sand
Oil in the marshes     rolling up on dry land
Oil in our veins     in every breath we take
But we gotta go back     but we gotta go back
To the Cold Firey Lake
